ASEAN JOINT STATEMENT ON THE SITUATION IN THE PHILIPPINES
Jakarta, 23 February 1986

  1. As member states of ASEAN, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand have followed with increasing concern the trend of events following the presidential election in the Philippines.

  2. A critical situation has emerged which portends bloodshed and civil war. The crisis can be resolved without widespread carnage and political turmoil. We call on all parties to restore national unity and solidarity so as to maintain national resilience.

  3. There is still time to act with restraint and bring about peaceful resolution. We hope that all Filipino leaders will join efforts to pave the way for a peaceful solution to the crisis.
